Mechanisms Mentioned in Abstracts

The title and abstract of the 3,056 records in the extended electroporation corpus were scanned for 30 mechanism names specific to the electroporation literature. The counts below show how often a mechanism is mentioned in the literature. A mechanism appearing in an abstract does not mean it was experimentally demonstrated in that study: it may equally have been mentioned in a rationale, a discussion or a negative finding.

“Records” is the number of records mentioning at least one mechanism from that family. It is not the sum of the member counts, because one record may mention several mechanisms from the same family, and for the same reason the six families add up to more than 3,056 records. Nor do the ECT and IRE counts add up to the family total: the difference is records of calcium electroporation, gene electrotransfer and records whose method could not be determined. What This Count Measures, and What It Does Not

The figures on this page come from a dictionary. It is published in full below, with the spellings each name matches and its search patterns. What the figures measure, and what they do not, is defined in this section.

What was scanned. The title, the abstract and, for records without one, the opening paragraph of the PDF. Full text is not scanned: the PDF body, tables, figure captions and reference lists are out of scope, and a mechanism appearing only in the full text does not show up in these counts. Matching is case-insensitive and is a substring match: the name “potentiat” also matches inside “potentiation” and “potentiated”. However many times a name occurs in a record, that record is counted once for it.

Negation is not distinguished. No negation, context or exclusion rule is defined that would stop a name from being counted. The sentence “no evidence of apoptosis” also matches the name “apoptosis”; the dictionary does not distinguish whether the sentence containing it is positive or negative. Only two structural limits narrow the count, and neither of them is contextual: (1) at most 6 mechanism names are kept per record, selected by which names occur most often in that record, so names further down the ranking go uncounted in publications that discuss many mechanisms; (2) outcome domains are counted only in clinical publications (primary clinical studies, case series and case reports), leaving preclinical and secondary publications outside this count.

A mention is not evidence. A mechanism appearing in an abstract does not mean that the mechanism or the outcome was demonstrated in that study. The name may equally appear in a rationale, a discussion of methods, a summary of the literature, a limitation or a negative finding. This page shows what the literature talks about, not what it establishes; no row should be read as an indicator of efficacy, safety or success.
