Neighbouring Technologies

Alongside electroporation, the source archive also holds the literature of technologies that are compared with it or confused with it. This page shows that literature as a separate set: all are peer-reviewed journal publications, none of them the electroporation treatment this portal is about. The set also holds non-medical uses of electroporation and hybrid techniques that combine it with electrolysis; where each sits relative to the boundary is stated in the table below.

How Do These Differ from Electroporation?

In electroporation the cell membrane is made transiently or permanently permeable by an electric pulse above a threshold. None of the technologies below does this; one of them (food and environmental PEF) is electroporation but not a medical use.

TechnologyWhat it doesPublications
Electrochemical Ablation (EChT)Produces cell death by driving a direct current that changes tissue pH and generates electrolysis products; applied on its own it involves no pulse that raises membrane permeability. The set also holds studies that combine electrolysis with electroporation pulses (E²); these sit on both sides of the boundary and do not enter the corpus.37
Thermal and Other Ablation MethodsRadiofrequency, microwave, cryoablation and focused ultrasound. Tissue death is by heat or freezing, not electroporation.21
Bioelectromagnetic FieldsEffects of low-voltage electric and magnetic fields on cells. No pulse exceeding the membrane permeability threshold is applied.11
Intralesional Chemotherapy without ElectroporationStudies in which the drug is injected directly into the lesion with no electric pulse applied. The comparison ground for electrochemotherapy.10
Food, Microbial and Environmental PEFPulsed electric field in food processing, microbial control and environmental applications. Electroporation, but not a medical use.6

The records on this page are not included in the portal's publication counts. The oncology corpus and the extended electroporation corpus count electroporation publications only; the documents here are kept in the source archive as context and are reported with their own figures.
